Miles Martinet, Irish Air Corps

Aircraft: Miles Martinet

Status: Version 1.0

X-plane version: 8.64

About:
The Irish Air Corps acquired two Miles Martinets (144 and 145) in July 1946. Before the arrival of the Martinets, the Air Corps had used a Fairey Battle and later a pair of Lysanders for towing duties. The Lysanders (which had been overhauled and converted by Shorts in Belfast at the end of the war) proved unable to tow at realistic speeds for the Hurricanes (and the expected Spitfires).

The Martinet was designed from the outset to tow targets for this class of fighter and was the logical choice. Most of its structure and systems were identical to the Miles Master II which was already in service with the Air Corps.

One Martinet (144) was written off in May 1952, the other (145) soldiered on until December 1958 when it became a ground instructional airframe.
